The Government of India is its recent announcement made it compulsory for the tax payers to link their aadhar cards with the PAN numbers. Before going further into the details of how to do it and why it is necessary, let’s have a look at a brief description of PAN number and Aadhar Card.
Aadhar card contains a unique sixteen digit number. It is produced by UIDAI (Unique Identification Authority of India). More than 75% of Indians have this card.
The government has made it compulsory for every citizen in India to get this card. However, privacy concerns have been raised due to which the Supreme Court of India has set up the 5-judge bench to hear whether it violate the privacy rights or not.
The card, apart from the unique number, also has the retina scan feature which further enhances its value. It is the considered to be the world’s largest unique identification system.
A PAN number is the 10-digit unique code which every tax payer is assigned in India. It is issued by the Income tax department to track the record of all the taxes that are filed by an individual.
Moreover, this card can also be used as an identity proof by the holder for getting their passport issued or while traveling in public transport etc. They can also use this card to prove their identity while getting a new telecom connection.
The central government has exempted certain sections from linking their aadhar cards to the PAN number. Make sure you are aware of these sections before you head to link your card with PAN number.
- The individuals residing in the state of Assam, Jammu and Kashmir and Meghalaya.
- Individuals who are considered as NRI (non-resident Indian) according to the Income Tax Act, 1961.
- Individuals above the age of 80.
- Any person residing in India but not the citizen of India.
Procedure to Link Your Aadhar Card with PAN Number
You can either link your aadhar card with PAN number through online means i.e. on the income tax website or through SMS procedure.
For SMS procedure, you will have to send an SMS to 56161 or 567678. The SMS should be in this format:
- UIDPAN<12-digt Aadhar number><10-digit PAN card number>
You can also link your aadhar card with PAN number by visiting the income tax website. The procedure starts with creating an account on the website and filling in the mandatory details.
You will find the link now an option on the website that will link your cards after verifying all the details.
The government of India gave the deadline of 30th June to the tax payers to link both the cards; however, due to excessive traffic, the website slowed down causing a lot of inconvenience to the users.
Due to this reason, the government has issued a one-page form which allows the tax payers to link their cards manually.
The government apart from linking the aadhar card with PAN numbers has also made it compulsory to have an aadhar card for the new tax payers in order to obtain a PAN number.
The Income Tax Department of India has been regularly reminding the tax payers through emails, texts, and tweets on microblogging website Twitter to file their tax returns before 31st July and to link their aadhar card with PAN number.
